Spray Foam Insulation

One of the key advantages that spray foam has over other insulation materials is its ability to expand. You can achieve an airtight seal with foam, it fills nooks and crannies seamlessly, so air can’t escape through. You’ll feel the difference with spray foam insulation, the difference in your heating and cooling bills will be significant. Spray foam insulations come in two forms:

  • Open-Cell Spray Foam
Open-cell spray foam expands more than other types of insulation, so you’re able to get the same amount of insulation coverage with less material. The r-value of open-cell isn’t as high as it is with closed-cell insulation, but this isn’t a problem if you have the space to spray in the extra volume of foam. Open-cell isn’t as dense as closed-cell insulation, which could be looked like a negative, but it actually creates a sound barrier that makes your home more comfortable. Vapor permeability is another key characteristic of open-cell spray foam; it doesn’t hold onto moisture; it just is able to pass right through before causing any damage.
  • Closed-Cell Spray Foam
If a high R-value is what you’re interested in, closed-cell spray foam is your best bet, it provides a tremendous amount of thermal resistance. Your home will be warm in the winter without having to crank up your heat or spend loads of money on bills. The high density of closed-cell spray foam adds strength and support that you wouldn’t get from alternative insulation materials. The durability also helps support your roof and walls, enforcing them further.

Fiberglass Insulation

For generations, fiberglass has been an excellent option for insulating your home. It’s made of fine particles of glass that are spun into fibers. Fiberglass is affordable and easily installed; that’s why it is so popular and has been around for so long. It does have its cons though, it isn’t able to provide the same R-Value compared to spray foam options, and it certainly can’t create an air barrier because of it’s fluffy texture.

The Verdict

Both spray foam and fiberglass insulations will keep your home much more insulated and protected than if they weren’t insulated at all, but they certainly aren’t the same. Now that spray foam insulation is widely available; it’s clear that it’s a superior product that’s able to keep your home more efficient than fiberglass can. Spray foam lasts much longer than fiberglass options and isn’t prone to mold, pests, and moisture, which make fiberglass break down quickly.
